Like fingerprints, no two-lip impressions are alike. A pot of homemade lip balm can be as unique its wearer's lips and makes an equally unique Valentine's Day gift. It's surprisingly easy to make. Simply assemble the ingredients yourself, or purchase a convenient Lip Balm Kit by Mail.
TECHNIQUE
Making Lip Balm
Shallow pot
Beeswax beads
Sunflower oil
Mixing jar
Pipette
Essentials oils such as peppermint, tangerine, vanilla, or grapefruit
Lipstick
Small lip-balm pots or tubes
1. Fill a shallow pot with 1 inch of water, and bring to a boil; lower the heat to low. (Wax is flammable; never melt it directly over a flame.)
2. Combine 3 teaspoons beeswax beads and 5 teaspoons sunflower oil in a mixing jar, and set the jar into the pot; the water should be below the rim of the jar. Stir the mixture using a pipette; the wax will begin to melt.
3. After thoroughly combined, add desired essential oils one drop at a time. Use about 10 drops in total; you can experiment with different combinations.
4. Add lipstick shavings directly to the mixing jar until you achieve desired color; keep in mind that, once cooled, the color will be lighter.
5. Fill each pot or tube with the mixture. To avoid the formation of a hole in the tube???s center, first fill it just past shaft; let cool, then fill to rim. Let cool for 20 minutes before moving the containers or adding lids.
